The Big Data Impact: How is Health Care Being Disrupted?

Reed Smith Big Data Health Care Conference

In April, I attended the Reed Smith Big Data Health Care Conference at the Quadrus Center in Menlo Park. The event focused on the impact of Big Data on Health Care.

Moderated by Bob Stefanski, Partner and Co-Chair of Reed Smith’s Venture Capital and Technology Practice Group, the panelists covered a wide variety of topics on the the significant impact of big data on the industry.

So, how is Big Data Disrupting the Heath Care Industry? According to the panelists …

  • Genome Sequencing – Big data is growing faster than Moore’s Law, an observation made in 1965  by Gordon Moore, Intel’s co-founder, that the number of transistors placed on an integrated circuit, doubles approximately every 24 months.  The value of Big Data is not in the data itself, which has become commoditized, but in the structuring of the data in a meaningful way to improve the quality of consumer health and to reduce the costs.
  • Payers – the Affordable Care Act has created the need for accurate coding for Big Data analytics.
  • Providers – it’s all about improving the patient outcome through predictive analytics – getting people healthy and keeping them healthy; empowering patients to take responsibility for their own health; and using tools that examine life style choices and their effects on a patient’s health.

According to the panellists, the convergence of Health Care and IT is clearly having a dramatic impact on the next generation of innovative new companies in Health Care … and the way in which we live.

Until next time,

Doreen
